A - F.A.T is a Fitness and Training program/subject taught at Turramurra High School.
Q - Why was F.A.T Created?
A - To align with Turramurra High Schools need to prepare students for senior school through project based learning.
Q - What is 'Project Based Learning' (PBEL)
A - Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.
Q- How long does it go for?
A - F.A.T is a 74 minute, two sessions a week course, that goes for 2 terms, approximately 20 weeks, for yr 10 students.
Q - What will students learn doing F.A.T?
A - The FAT project is designed to help students understand principals of fitness training in a fun, dynamic and kinaesthetic environment. Here students will be able to learn to exercise and move with sound technique and in turn develop their own functional training programs.
At completion of this subject students will have a strong knowledge of Resistance Exercise Training (RET) and Aerobic Exercise Training (AET) through various modalities and methods. The course is 80% Practical and %20 Theory. Home research is to be completed prior to every class session via MyEd. This is delivered in a flipped classroom approach.
The meaningful products or experiences students will obtain through the F.A.T course will be demonstrated through three key areas: 1. The development of their own training program video, accessible through information communication technology sources. 2. The application of sound and safe training techniques, Demonstrated in a run/swim/run event. 3. The student’s ability to understand, apply and perform movements in a show cased event similar to those seen in CrossFit Games or obstacle course events.
Q - What types of criteria will be met during the course?
A: 1) Week 5 Term 1 students complete a personal exercise bank that demonstrates knowledge of 5 key movements. 1, Squat. 2, Pull up. 3, Plank. 4, Push up. 5, Hip Hinge. This may be presented using any form of media chosen by the student.
2) Week 10 Term 1 Run/Swim/Run. This is a 2.5 km run From THS to Macquarie University Pool followed by a 200 - 800m swim (Ability Negotiated) then a 2.5km return run From Macquarie University Pool to THS.
3) Students create a basic exercise program to suit their sport and or interests which is implemented from weeks 5 - 10. Here students must program appropriate training to suite their skill or health related fitness components. This must comprise a tailored training diary with pre and post testing to find the adaptations that have taken place.
4) Week 10 Term 2 students exhibit their knowledge and understanding through competing in a number of team and individual events that are not disclosed until the day of event. This event is to take place at CrossFit Norwest (Full Day Event) http://www.crossfitnorwest.com. It is here where students will record a reflective Vlog detailing their journey during the FAT course.
5) The ability to apply effort, grit, resilience and determination to each training session.
Q - What Information Communication Technology (ICT) is used in F.A.T?
A - There are 3 main ICT systems used. Google Classroom for assessment notification and general communication, MyEd for quests and questions for gauging ideas and Youtube, for a lot of tutorials that already exist online. The last is a students choice; which is explained above.
